“Going to the fabric store is a happy day for me,” says Far North Dallas resident Kristina McCook, who began dabbling in sewing several years ago. It was a natural progression considering she grew up with a mother who sewed “matching outfits for me and all of my dolls.” So when McCook had her own daughter, it wasn’t long until she was sewing her own pint-sized garments. “My daughter has bright blue eyes, so I love her in black, and I know it mortifies my mother-in-law and mom,” she jokes. “But I’m not a pinky, lacey girly-girl.” Instead, McCook began creating T-shirts with vintage-inspired appliqués that are “are more classic, less cutesy.” That style generated a buzz in our neighborhood, and soon her friends were ordering T-shirts for their kids. It snowballed into Modern Frills, a clothing line for babies and children McCook launched about a year ago. She’s kept with the T-shirts, and offers a few pant sets as well. Most shirts are about $30, and she’ll create an adult version for an extra $5. McCook, who creates about four new designs every six months, says her top sellers are her birthday T-shirts. “I love cake stands, so I wanted to find a way to incorporate that into my designs,” she explains. The result: a silhouette of a tiered birthday cake on a stand, with the age celebrated in the center. “One of my favorite things about the birthday T-shirts is that parents will send me photos of their kids wearing them at their birthday parties.”
