Christie McCabe is a 25-year-old ball of energy. She teaches fourth grade at Spring Creek Elementary, and the rest of the time, she’s in her kitchen baking up tasty treats for friends, family and any other locals who happen to stumble across her blog, Daily Dose of Sweet. “A couple of years ago, I discovered the world of baking blogs, and I was hooked,” McCabe says. She scours the web for recipes and gets creative in her presentation with incredibly detailed icing on everything from cupcakes to three-tier cakes. For the Super Bowl, she baked cookies in the shape of football jerseys and iced them with each player’s name and number. She bakes around party themes such as the Oscars and Valentine’s Day as well as vocations such as the Army and firefighting. She has never taken a class. “It’s all just trial and error, and finding tips from other baking blogs,” she says. McCabe decided she wanted to be a teacher in 10th-grade while attending Lake Highlands High School, from which she graduated. A teacher made an impact on her, inspiring her to do the same in other children’s lives. McCabe is well known at Spring Creek for her sweet treats, since she often bakes for class parties. She’s considering the idea of opening her own bakery one day. “It’s hard to imagine not teaching because I love it so much, but I’m excited about what this might lead to.”
