Mad Tavern is inspired by “Alice in Wonderland.” But you have to look closely to notice how.
“We wanted it to be something a little more unique,” says general manager Chance Harper. “But we didn’t want to be gimmicky.” The rabbit’s clock on the wall, the Mad Hatter’s table hanging upside down from the ceiling and the general European ambiance help create subtle references to the whimsical tale. In a concept that marries Old Monk and Flying Saucer, the menu touts 141 beers, hailing from Texas to Scotland. “We wanted to cater to the beer connoisseur,” Harper says. The cocktail list is where the bartenders got creative. Each drink loosely represents a character from “Alice in Wonderland.” For example, the Tweedledee Twins Tini is blue because, in practically every version of the story, Tweedledee and Tweedledum are wearing blue. Jabberwocky is a villain, so its drink contains a darker mixture of Jagermeister and root beer. “We watched every single ‘Alice in Wonderland’ movie we could find,” says lead bartender TJ Underwood. In regard to food, you’ll find all the traditional European standards such as fish and chips — the top seller — and shepherd’s pie. Mad Tavern is a haven for soccer fans and American football fans alike.
