My Very Own Book, a local nonprofit that provides reading incentive programs to Title 1 schools, celebrated its top readers during a special event last weekend at the Eisemann Center, featuring keynote speaker Judge Olly Neal.
Judge Neal, who grew up with 12 siblings in a house with no electricity, shared his experience of how reading helped him overcome obstacles and eventually become a circuit judge. “If you don’t have the money to take your kids on a trip around the world, they can explore the world by reading,” he said.
MVOB serves schools in Dallas, Plano and Richardson, including Spring Valley Elementary in Far North Dallas.
Pictured above are the program’s top readers honored at the event: Britney Nnamdi (Mendenhall Elementary, PISD), Donnelly Mekondo (Audelia Creek, RISD), Jaylor Crawford (Elisha M. Pease, DISD), Jordon Geter, front (Edward Titche, DISD), Emmanuel Flores (Barron, PISD), Matthew Gonzalez (Maria Moreno, DISD), Samantha Jackson (Spring Valley, RISD) and MVOB President Helen Van Auken.
