Is there a budding young filmmaker living at your house? Is your high school or college student passionate about energy conservation?
The Dallas Film Society, host of the Dallas International Film Festival (DIFF), is teaming up with TXU Energy to sponsor a student film contest. Participants will submit a 3-5 minute short film about the future of energy conservation in hopes of having their creation shown for 2012 DIFF crowds.
In addition to the big-time exposure (the top 3 high school and college winners get to have their film screened at DIFF) there are cash prizes for your school’s film department (from $1,250 to $7,500) and individual prizes, which include cash and/or video editing software. The deadline for submission is February 10, 2012 and more details are available here.
“The festival is a great event that not only celebrates film and filmmakers, it celebrates the City of Dallas,” said RISD mom Karen Fleig, who’s handling advertising and marketing for the Dallas Film Society. The “festival village” will be at Mockingbird Station April 12-22, but there will also be events at West Village, the Majestic Theater, Texas Theater in Oak Cliff and NorthPark’s AMC.
Several schools from RISD have entered in the past, Karen says, and a team from Richardson High has won. High School Roundtables are held every other month by the Dallas Film Society, including one last month on the set of Dallas. “Roundtables are fun, informative and introduce students to the world of filmmaking on a local and attainable level.”

If you were out partying New Year’s Eve (or if you were out like a light), you may have missed Richardson ISD’s J.J. Pearce grad Chris Pearson and his band Sleeperstar performing to big crowds at the Big D NYE celebration in the American Airlines Center plaza. This video was compiled and posted by Drew Cotten, who’s worked closely with the band and who performed as a member of Pearce’s pop group, Forte, as Pearson did.
What with winning last year’s Fast Track to Fame contest, performing for this and other high-profile concerts, releasing their newest album “Just Another Ghost” and being featured on the new Tom Hanks movie trailer “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” Sleeperstar looks to be on a rapid rise. You can follow them on Facebook here.
Earlier this week, we told you about some neighborhood restaurants offering special New Year’s Eve dinners. Here are a few other ways to ring in 2012.

Richardson High grad Courtney Parmalee and Lake Highlands grad Madison Barnes first met when they arrived on the Oklahoma University campus in 2010. When the sorority sisters and best buds heard that Khloe Kardashian would be making an appearance in Dallas over Christmas break, they knew there’d be no crowd too large or temps too cold to keep them from meeting the reality-star. Here’s what Courtney (pictured in the photo) shared about the experience:
I heard about Khloe’s Toy Drive on the news late Tuesday night and I immediately called to wake up Madison. “I’ll be at your house at 9! We’re going to meet Khloe!” I yelled into the phone. Each fan was asked to donate a new toy for Children’s Medical Center in exchange for pictures or autographs, so after making a quick trip to Target we waited in line for 3 hours outside of Dallas City Hall. It was definitely cold but the picture made it worth it!
It seems like every time Madison and I turn on our TV, one of the many Kardashian reality shows is playing. (In fact, everyone in line had to sign a waiver in case we are featured on their reality show, Khloe and Lamar.) We have both become fans this year but Khloe has always been our favorite because she is certainly the most down-to-earth and seems to have a positive and a hilarious personality. When Madison told me Lamar Odom, Khloe’s husband, had been traded to the Mavs, we both started screaming. When it was finally our turn to shake her hand, we both told her how happy we are that Dallas is her new home and wished Lamar and the Mavericks another great season. Khloe seemed to be very grateful for the turnout.
