Jim, ever the gentleman, even let me plug my wine blog. And, since it’s live radio, I gave the wrong address for the Advocate website. Sorry, Wamre. We talked about this weekend’s city council elections; the old, white guys who run Dallas and who think it’s 1983 and not 2013; development in Oak Cliff and why the city hasn’t screwed it up; and the foolishness around the Gaston/Garland/Grand development in East Dallas. © Jeff Siegel for Advocate Magazine, 2013. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us Post tags:

The post Siegel and Schutze, one more time appeared first on Advocate Magazine.

• Remember the water taxis that were going to shuttle us around the Trinity River park after the tollroad was built? Turns out they were such a good idea that Fort Worth wants to use them. Seriously. I’m not good enough to make this stuff up. The Star-Telegram (may be behind a pay wall) reports that city officials in Fort Worth want to make future development in their downtown more pedestrian friendly, and these ideas include “building pedestrian bridges and using water taxis to allow pedestrians to cross the Trinity River.” But I’m sure ours will be will cooler than theirs. • Ask a banker, and they’ll tell you the best way to pay bills electronically is through your bank and not directly to your credit card company, utility and the like. That’s more than than self interest, as 39,000 Atmos Energy customers discovered yesterday. They were charged 10 times the amount of their bill, thanks to a glitch utility’s automatic billing process. In a statement, Atmos apologized for the error and said it would reimburse any overdraft fees and reimburse customers for the overcharges. • Want to know who has raised what for this weekend’s City Council and school board elections? KERA runs down DISD spending, while The Morning News’ city hall blog checks on several of the city council races. © Jeff Siegel for Advocate Magazine, 2013. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us Post tags:

The post Three things for Tuesday: Water taxis, gas bills, campaign financing appeared first on Advocate Magazine.

This Monday and Tuesday are the last opportunities to vote early before the municipal and ISD elections next Tuesday, May 11. Here’s a Google map of early voting locations (take your pick, if you’re a registered voter) and an easy way to view your sample ballot before you go. All Dallas voters will have the chance to vote “yes” or “no” on whether to sell two parcels of the city’s parkland. The Dallas Morning News has information and opinions on these propositions in this editorial. Many city council districts have contested races because of redrawn council district boundaries and incumbents who are either leaving or termed out. Far North Dallas’ District 11, which Councilwoman Linda Koop has overseen for eight years, is one of those. After four consecutive terms, she cannot run this election, and two candidates, Lee Kleinman and Ori Raphael, are seeking her spot. Their thoughts on a number of topics can be read in editor Monica Nagy’s coverage of one of the District 11 candidate forums. Councilwoman Sandy Greyson represents Far North Dallas’ other District 12, and she is running unopposed. Last week, the Friends of the Northaven Trail surveyed District 11 as well as District 13 candidates about their willingness to complete the trail, which should eventually run from one district to the other. The nonpartisan Dallas League of Women Voters asked several questions of each council candidate in its voter guide; topics include a city manager change-up, gas drilling, tree preservation and the proposed Trinity Parkway. Read candidates’ answers here. The three DISD districts up for election this year — four, five and seven — are all in the southern part of Dallas. Three seats are also up for election in Richardson ISD, and only one of those races is contested; incumbent Lanet Greenhaw has two challengers, Bonnie Abadie and Rachel Chumney. © Keri Mitchell for Advocate Magazine, 2013. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us Post tags:

The post Last chance to vote early (and who’s running again?) appeared first on Advocate Magazine.

The Cotton Belt Concerned Citizens Coalition have once again drafted a plea to legislators concerning Senate Bill 1333. If passed by the House of Representatives, the bill would create a special tax district to fund the immediate construction of the Cotton Belt Rail Line. As the legislative session in Austin ends May 27, neighbors are concerned the House will pass the bill last minute. Below they put together an email to send out to: Speaker of the House Joe Strauss, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, and House Transportation Committee chairman Larry Phillips at larry.phillips@house.tx.us. Dear [insert name], SB 1333, which would create a Special Tax District for construction of a Cotton Belt Commuter Rail Line, would have a huge impact on Far North Dallas neighborhoods that are adjacent to the tracks. To date, the bill does not contain language that adequately addresses the concerns of the residents who live in these neighborhoods. ·Within a 2.6 mile section of the proposed 62 mile corridor, sixty-five hundred (6,500) residents live within 250 feet of the tracks, some as close as 25 feet. ·The proposed rail line crosses six major thoroughfares in the area that carry tens of thousands of daily commuters. ·The many layers of boards the bill proposes would lessen the voice and input of impacted citizens. ·Over 1,000 residents are active in the Cotton Belt Concerned Citizens Coalition, which was formed to represent their interests regarding rail construction through the area. This group has never failed to have 400 to 500 people at any public meeting called to discuss the Cotton Belt Corridor. ·The consortium requesting the creation of a special tax district (SB 1333) has never met with residents to determine viable alternatives for construction and operation of commuter rail through this densely populated area. ·The consortium has steadfastly refused to publish any plans, yet it is asking for a mechanism to provide funding without disclosing its plans. Please do not pass SB 1333 in its current form. This bill is very controversial – over 250 emails were recently sent to the Senate bill’s sponsor opposing the bill. Sincerely, [your name] © Monica S.
